2021-22 Photojournalism

2022 Photojournalism Championship

This year, 187 entries were received in the two photojournalism competitions. The first-place winners of the News & Feature and Picture Story/Series competitions qualified to participate in the Championship. In addition, 10 top entrants from those competitions qualified for a semi-final round of judging. For this round, the semi-finalists submitted portfolios which included portraits, features, sports shots, news pieces, singles and a picture story. After much deliberation, the program judges selected the four additional
finalists who would join the first-place winners to attend the Hearst National Photojournalism Championship held in San Francisco, May 20-26, 2022.

Friday, May 20th, shortly after arriving in San Francisco, the photo finalists met the judges for orientation, a portfolio review and to receive their assignments. This year’s
assignment: “Celebrate individual expression and reveal in 10-15 photographs the California Dream.”

The judges received the final portfolios Tuesday evening. The winners were announced at the final awards ceremony on Wednesday.

The first-through-third place winners were awarded scholarships of $10,000, $7,500, and $5,000 respectively. The three finalists earned $1,500 scholarship awards.

In addition, two $1,000 awards were presented for Best Portfolio and Best Single Photo, selected from the semi-final entries.
