2002 National Championship
May 30- June 3, 2002
The 42nd Annual National Hearst Journalism Awards Championship was the culmination of the 2001-2002 monthly competitions. 24 finalists with top scores in those competitions were brought to San Francisco to demonstrate their abilities in on-the-spot assignments and compete for additional scholarship awards. The writing, photojournalism, radio broadcast and television broadcast finalists, along with program judges, Journalism Deans, and special guests convened the first week of June for this unique event.
The writing finalists interviewed Professor Ling-chi Wang, Chair of UC Berkeley’s Ethnic Studies department, and wrote a news story and a personality/profile about their subject. In addition, they researched and wrote and on-the-spot article about San Francisco’s historic Chinatown. The photo finalists were given five assignments: an on-the-spot news photo, a feature photo for page one of the Metro section, an entertainment photo for the weekend section, an event coverage photo, and an image of “San Francisco for tourists.” The radio broadcast finalists’ assignment was about security in the bay area after 9/11/01 while the television broadcast finalists produced a piece on the city’s famed cable cars.
The judges received the completed articles, images, and tapes on the morning of Monday June 3rd for review. The winners were announced that evening at the awards ceremony.
