2006 National Championship
June 5-11, 2006
The 46th Annual National Hearst Journalism Awards Championship was the culmination of the 2005-2006 monthly competitions. 24 finalists with top scores in those competitions were brought to San Francisco to demonstrate their abilities in on-the-spot assignments and compete for additional scholarship awards of up to $5,000. The writing, photojournalism, radio broadcast and television broadcast finalists, along with program judges, Journalism Deans, and special guests convened the first week of June for this unique event.
The writing finalists interviewed Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown and produced a news story and a personality/profile about their subject. In addition, they researched and wrote an on-the-spot article about immigration. The photo finalists were given four assignments: a photo story about Chinatown, four to ten images of San Francisco “behind the scenes,” one feature photo, and a night time in the City photo. The radio finalists and television finalists were both assigned a story about immigration.
The judges received the completed articles, images, and tapes by the morning of June 10th for review. The winners were announced that evening at the awards ceremony at the Asian Art Museum.
